Insights, trends & tools to build a better online business.

Welcome to this week’s dispatch. A highly curated selection of trends, insights, tools, news, and opportunities from around the web to help you build a better online business.

Over the past week, I've been deep in the trenches with Airtable's new AI features, optimizing my workflows like never before. I'm excited about the strides I'm making on an app designed to better organize, tag, and distribute the wealth of content I process each week.

Thanks to Airtable's AI, I'm now able to tackle projects that seemed out of reach a year ago. If you haven’t started exploring Airtable’s AI, I highly suggest you give it a spin.

Enough about me—I have a great lineup of content for you this week, including:

  • 📈 HubSpot’s 2024 Marketing Report: Key takeaways from HubSpot's 43-page analysis on current marketing trends.

  • 🤔 Procrastinators Guide to $700K: Dan Koe’s 'deep work' method that helped him generate $700K in 30 days.

  • ✍️ Erik Hoel’s Newsletter Growth to 40,000 Subscribers: Erik’s journey to gaining over 40,000 local newsletter subscribers and recognition in renowned publications.

  • ♾️ Jaisal Rathee’s Newsletter Growth and Exit Strategy: Jaisal's tactics for quickly expanding and successfully exiting newsletters.

 📈 Trends

I reviewed Hubspot's 43-page marketing report for 2024 and highlighted some of the key points to keep you updated on the latest marketing trends.

⚙️ Marketing Tech:

Hubspot mentions a significant shift towards using AI and automation tools, with 64% of marketers already integrating these AI tools into their campaigns. So, if you are not utilizing AI tools yet in your marketing campaigns, you are probably falling behind in your industry.

🛣️ Channel ROI:

The report details that SEO, email marketing, and social media are among the top channels delivering significant ROI. Good old-fashioned email still averages one of the best ROI’s at $36 for every $1 spent and adding AI-powered personalization can apparently help increase it by up to 70%.

📂 Data Collection Issues:

65% of marketers report not having high-quality data on their target audience, revealing data collection and accuracy challenges. This is a major issue, as poor data analysis can damage your brand's reputation, decreasing trust and customer loyalty. 24% of marketers also feel the tools they use are not well interconnected, complicating data sharing across platforms. This creates inefficiencies in your workflow, as you will spend additional time manually transferring data between platforms..

 Sales and Marketing Misalignment:

Only 35% of marketers report that their sales and marketing teams are strongly synchronized. This can have significant problems, as coordinated efforts between these two are crucial for converting leads into sales and achieving overall business goals. So, as you grow your project, it’s important to work on implementing integrated CRM systems (like HubSpot) and set up regular alignment meetings, which can help synchronize efforts efficiently when building your team.

 💡 Insights

🤔 The Procrastinator's Guide to $700K

Dan Koe shares his deep work strategy, which propelled him to earn $700K in 30 days. He reveals how he leveraged tactical stress, quarterly projects, public writing, and tactical promotion to achieve remarkable results.

  • Procrastination as Your Superpower: Uncover how procrastination can actually be transformed into a powerful tool for achieving extraordinary results.

  • Unlock Tactical Success: Learn how to build a loyal audience to drive product sales with Dan's daily writing routine.

  • Thoughts: It's amazing how, instead of trying to suppress procrastination, he capitalizes on this common "difficult" but natural character trait - one that society has made you feel bad about, to structure his life to maximize productivity.

✍️ Erik Hoel's Path to 40,000 Newsletter Subscribers

Growth in Reverse gives us some insights into how Erik went from having no audience in 2021 to over 40,000 subscribers 36 months later and securing features in prestigious publications like Slate and Politico with just 2,900 Twitter followers.

  • Build Community Behind a Paywall: Erik nurtures his tight-knit community with free posts and then hides subscriber posts behind a modest paywall ($7/m). Here, subscribers gain access to features like asking Erik questions and entering competitions, generating Erik an estimated $112,000 annually.

  • Make Your Content Stand Out: Discover how he takes a meticulous approach to writing. He believes that even minor errors can deter readers, so he often waits months before publishing and collaborates with illustrators to make his content memorable and engaging.

  • Thoughts: This strategy highlights why you should focus on authenticity and personalization in your content creation, especially in a world of generic AI content. This will lead to a loyal and engaged audience that will unlock your paywall incentives.

♾️ Jaisal Rathee's Newsletter Infinite Sell Loop

Juicy Ideas shares Jaisal Rathee's formula for rapidly growing and exiting multiple directory-style newsletters.

  • 0 to 1000 Subscribers: Explore Jaisal’s strategies for overcoming the initial challenges of subscriber growth as he automatically acquires 1000+ subscribers by using his newsletters to grow his other newsletters in the same niche.

  • Subscribers ➡️ Sponsors: Subscribers are the target audience for sponsorship opportunities. Jaisal even mentions that ALL of his sponsors are inbound leads.

  • Thoughts: Jaisal’s strategy of creating a continuous loop of selling directory-style newsletters is genius. The ease of transferability and lack of personal brand reliance make these newsletters attractive to potential buyers.

🏪 Turning a Local Newsletter Into a $200k Revenue Business

Ryan Sneddon has built a 6 figure local newsletter, Naptown Scoop, which amassed over 18,000 subscribers, nearly half of Annapolis's population, in just three and a half years.

  • Growing Local: Leveraging the newsletter's local influence, Ryan branches into several local business ventures. He's starting a portable restroom business and contemplating future projects like a marketing agency or a fence-building company.

  • Move Your Best Content to The Bottom: Ryan mentions a quick tip to maximize reader engagement by placing his most popular content, including sports updates, at the bottom of the newsletter. This clever layout ensures readers view all ads as they scroll to their favorite sections.

  • Thoughts: This newsletter has become vital to its community fabric, generating strong local connections and serving as a launchpad for local business opportunities.

🧰 Apps & Tools

📩 Unibox: Manage all your emails and messages in one platform, with spam filtering and privacy. This is a great tool for staying organized and focused on your core business activities, as you can collaborate with your co-founder on the same page.

🖇️ Linktopia: Use this tool to build backlinks to improve your website's domain authority and drive more traffic to your platform. You can earn money by linking to people's businesses based on your ‘link juice’ score. (I have never been a fan of the process and workflow of getting sketchy emails from public domains like Gmail or random PR companies saying they represent a brand - then comes negotiating, payment, follow-up, etc. This platform seems to help with the flow.)

📝 Off/Script: Off/Script is a community-led platform that uses AI to turn any idea into a tangible, monetizable product. You can use this to action your product ideas without the financial barriers typically associated with hiring a product designer.

⏹️ ML Blocks: Use drag and drop to build visual AI workflows in minutes without coding knowledge. Use this to quickly create sophisticated image processing workflows and automation to enhance your business operations.

👥 Attio: This data-driven CRM is designed to precisely suit your project, enabling you to build a CRM system that matches your project's needs. It also claims to be the first truly multiplayer CRM with real-time changes from collaborators. Attio Looks like a solid, flexible, but minimalist CRM for entrepreneurs.
